Dave Chery made the best of his two completions of the day, hurling two touchdowns to lead the Golden Eagles to a 14 - 8 overtime win over Franklin K. Lane in the season opener for both teams. With the win, SGHS ends a nine-game losing streak.

Facing a 4th down and 17 in overtime, Chery scrambled for 27 yards to give the Eagles new life. Three plays  later, the QB rolled left and hit Tadd Willoughby for the winning score.

Lane struck first with a long drive capped by a 4 yard TD run and added a two point conversion for an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles first score came in the third quarter as Dave Chery broke one tackle and found Timothy Johnson alone behind two Lane defenders and easily tossed a 15 yard touchdown. Emanuel Evans ran off tackle for the conversion and a 8-8 tie that would last until the overtime peiod.

Next week, the Golden Eagles visit George Washington High School. The Trojans dropped their opener 38-14 at Far Rockaway this weekend. Franklin K. Lane faces South Bronx HS at John Adams.
