MANNY'S LONG RUNS HELP SG BOUNCE BACK

Varsity vs Petrides on 9/20/2008
Posted Saturday, September 20, 2008 by Charles Yarborough

The Golden Eagles overcame a 7-0 halftime deficit and a feverish final two minutes of the game to hold off Petrides 22-14 on Staten Island.

Emanuel Evans put SG on the board with a 93 yard run on the second play from scrimmage of the second half and gave the Golden Eagles a 8-7 lead with his two point conversion. A 76 yard Evans run (and conversion) early in the fourth quarter put Springfield up 16 - 7.  Emmanuel would finish with 194 yards rushing.

The Golden Eagles defense was solid for most of the game pressuring the Petrides QB and Center into bad throws and bad snaps. One turrnover would be costly as Tyquan Ward recovered a fumble in the end zone for a  22 - 7 lead. The lead seemed solid for the Golden Eagles until Petrides returned the subsequent kickoff 80 yards for a score.

The Golden Eagles have won two of their first three games for the first time since the 2002 season when they finished with six wins.

Evans rushing performance places him amongst the elite running backs in recent history at Springfield Gardens. His 194 yards was the most since 2001 when Brandon Rush accumulated 201 yards (on only 5 carries) at Flushing High School. More recently, Garet Lynch ran for 186 yards in 2004 at Columbus.

A long TD run seemed to highlight each big rushing game as Rush took a trap 97 yards for a score and Lynch scored a 81 yard run in his big game.
